Bordeaux

Bordeaux is more than the capital of wine. It's a seriously artsy, relaxed and elegant destination with old Paris vibes but a far more laid-back feel. Here everything flows slowly, like a sip of red Merlot. You'll be won over from the first moment by the 18th-century architecture, squares that look like film sets and bistros with tables outside (yes, even when there's a bit of a breeze).

The historic centre is a UNESCO treasure, packed with pedestrian streets, concept stores and shop windows that whisper "come in, just to browse". At Place de la Bourse you'll snap the most poetic selfie at the Miroir d’eau, and at the Cité du Vin you'll learn more about wine than you knew there was to know.

Bordeaux has amazing food too: canelés (little caramelised cakes), local cheeses and, of course, wine for every moment. In the evening, the banks of the Garonne fill up with locals and music, and you just sit back, soak it all in and wonder "why didn't I come sooner?"
