Catania

On Sicily's east coast, Catania (Katane to the ancient Greeks) sprawls across the ash of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano. The city moves to the rhythm of lava: intense, theatrical and always ready to rise again. Stroll down Via Etnea with the snow-capped summit as your backdrop, then stop at Piazza del Duomo, where the city's elephant mascot, "Liotru", balances an Egyptian obelisk on its back. It's a weird but totally charming combo that gives off the right vibes instantly.

The Benedictine Monastery, now a university hub, is a baroque maze packed with centuries of stories, while the Teatro Massimo Bellini reminds you that Catania is a music town too. The open-air fish market behind the Cathedral of Saint Agatha is a real spectacle: shouting vendors, amazing smells, "street food" grilled right in front of you and swordfish glinting in the sun.

An evening in Catania means aperitivo under the arcades of Via Crociferi, with baroque façades lit up like a stage set. And when the city winds down, the black lava stone on the buildings takes on a metallic glow, as if to remind you that the earth here never sleeps. Catania doesn't ask you to "get it". It just asks you to live it, even for a little while, at its own pace.
