What applies to infants (0 to 2 years)?
Infants (0 to 2 years) can travel normally, but specific rules apply to documents, seats and fees. Below is everything you need to know.
1. Travel documents
Infants need their own passport, even for travel within the EU. They cannot travel on an ID card or a family record book.
2. Seating on the plane
- Infants travel on an adult's lap.
- Each adult can accompany only one infant.
- If you want the infant to have their own seat, you usually have to buy a separate seat and use an approved child seat (depending on the airline).
3. Infant fees
Airlines do not provide free tickets for infants. There is usually either:
- a small fee, or
- a percentage of the standard fare
The exact policy depends on the airline and is calculated automatically in the package.
4. Infant baggage
Baggage allowances for infants differ by airline. They may include:
- A pushchair or buggy free of charge
- A small bag (not always)
Whatever is included is shown clearly on the package page.
5. What else you should know
- On long flights there may be baby bassinets, but they have to be requested after booking and are always subject to availability.
- If the infant is travelling without one or both parents, official written consent with a certified signature is required.
Important
- Infant rules differ by airline, which is why what applies to your trip is shown on the package page, or you can ask us.
- Before you travel, make sure you have every document the infant needs.
