What do children need in order to travel?
Children need travel documents exactly as adults do, but the requirements change with their age and the destination. Below is what applies in most cases.
1. Travel documents for children
Within the EU / Schengen
Children can travel with:
- A new-format ID card (with Latin characters), or
- A passport
A family record book is not a travel document.
Outside the EU
- A passport is mandatory, whatever the age.
2. Infants (0 to 2 years)
Infants need their own passport, even for travel within the EU. They cannot travel on an ID card.
3. If the child is travelling without one or both parents
Official written consent with a certified signature is required:
- From the parent who is not travelling, or
- From both parents, if the child is accompanied by a third party
Border authorities and airlines can ask for this document during checks.
Important
- All documents must be valid on the day of travel.
- For travel outside the EU, many countries require a passport valid for 3 to 6 months beyond your return.
- If in doubt, always check the official travel guidance for the destination country, or ask us before departure.
