Do I need a passport for certain destinations?

For travel inside and outside Europe, document requirements differ considerably depending on the destination country. Before you travel, it matters to know whether an ID card is enough or whether you need a valid passport.

When you do not need a passport

You can travel on a new-format ID card alone (with Latin characters) to countries in:

  • The European Union (EU)
  • The Schengen Area

When a passport is required

For countries outside the EU and/or outside Schengen, most require a passport.

Some destinations that require a passport:

  • The United Kingdom (UK) (an approved ETA is also needed)
  • Switzerland
  • Norway
  • Serbia and Albania
  • The USA

(The list above is indicative. Each country's official regulations always apply.)

Important

  • Your passport must be valid, and many countries require it to stay valid for at least 3 to 6 months beyond the travel date.
  • If you are travelling with children, extra rules apply (a mandatory passport, written permission from the other parent when they are not both travelling).
  • Before you travel, always check the official requirements of the destination country or the airline, as they can change.
