What documents do I need to travel within the EU?
For travel within the European Union, Greek citizens can travel with an ID card or a passport, as long as it is valid.
Accepted documents
- A new-format police ID card (with Latin characters) issued in the last fifteen years
- A valid passport
Children travelling within the EU
Children must travel with a passport, unless they hold a new-format ID card (rare at a young age). A family record book is not a travel document.
If the child is travelling without one or both parents
Official, certified written consent is required from:
- The parent who is not travelling, or
- Both parents, if the child is travelling with a third party
Airlines and border authorities can ask for this document before allowing travel.
Important
- Documents must be valid on the day of travel.
- Some countries may require the document to stay valid for a set period after arrival (6 months, for example).
- Before you travel, it is worth checking the country's or the airline's official page for any exceptions.
- All this information applies to holders of Greek ID cards or passports. If you hold another country's passport, contact your country's embassy.
